In Old Babylonian society, nadītu and other women who held religious offices were not allowed to bear children. Traditionally, this taboo on childbearing has been explained as a sex (chastity) or blood (cultic impurity). I believe these traditional explanations be faulty inadequate, suggest an alternative approach based the concepts of alterity constructed social identity. By fitting norm their group, viz. women, by definition birth giving beings, they are ‘othered’ non-birth-giving-beings, which indeed is literal meaning nadītu: ‘the fallow (woman).’ However, ‘otherness’ conceived negative problematic, contrary, it added greatly status privileged group within society.
